Neuschwanstein
This castle is located in Bavaria near the town of Fussen. Neuschwanstein was built by King Ludwig II to get away from the public. The castle was open to be viewed in 1886 after his death. It is now getting about 6,000 tourists a day in the summer months. Today, the castle is one of the most picturesque buildings in all of Germany.
However, there is much upkeep that needs to be done to the castle because the foundation is slowly moving. The rock walls have to be resecured and replaced every so often so the building does not collapse. The castle includes a double story throne room that reaches 15 meters high that is covered in galleries. The Hall of Holy Grail was Ludwig's favorite. In this hall, Ludwig combined his memories from the Middles Ages with the latest technology. Ludwig was a large fan of Richard Wagner, a theatre director and composer. This is apparent throughout his house; the Gothic influence and details that relate to Wagner's operas. One of these is a swan-shaped tap on Ludwig's dressing table that was inspired by 'Lohengrin.' The fourth floor which is completely occupied by the Singers Hall contains characters from Wagner's opera. |
